Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Program

The Inter-Tribal Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention Program is an innovative project that incorporates delinquency and substance abuse prevention, advocacy for court-involved youth, and services for families to help reduce the amount of juvenile crime committed by and against tribal youth. The Inter-Tribal Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Program offers services for tribal youth and their families.  We target substance abuse prevention through a series of engaging, informative workshops specifically geared toward tribal youth and community members through a number of fun outings and events, and through partnerships with health care providers and rehabilitation centers. The JJDP Program has also created a unique network of social service providers, health care providers, academic assistance programs, family mediation specialists and other professionals who can address the needs and concerns of the family as a whole.  These services, commonly referred to as “wrap-around” services, help insure that the tribal youth who participate in the JJDP Program can have the support they need at home, just as they do during program events. JJDP Program staff can offer support and guidance as tribal youth and their families confront a challenging judiciary system.  Accompaniment to court hearings, workshops with attorneys and legal system personnel, treatment and case planning for youth who are being released from detention facilities, and the support of an entire network system of legal and law enforcement professionals are provided to each of the court-involved youth who participate in the program. Any Native youth who lives within the project service areas of Mendocino, Lake, Sacramento, Yolo, Fresno or Madera counties, as well as some of their surrounding areas, may participate. Youth do not need to be court-involved to receive prevention services.  Youth who already have pending or open cases with a juvenile court may receive advocacy services as well as participate in the prevention services. Tribal youth and their families who wish to participate in the program will need to contact a program staff member to verify what services are available.  The Inter-Tribal Council of California has other programs in place for tribal youth, as well as several more in development.  For questions regarding the JJDP Program or any other youth program, please contact us at the number below.
